If you're a recent graduate, you know that the job search can be kind of difficult. Some companies see recent graduates as too green, too risky, and not worth hiring, but I beg to differ. I think recent graduates have a lot of benefits to bring to companies because we have lived through a culture almost vastly different than the ones previous, and that has shaped us into hard, driven workers. Below are five reasons as to why you should hire a recent college graduate.
1. We grew up in a technological world: I can't even remember when my family didn't have a computer. Our generation has grown up being surrounded by several technological advances--from computers, the first iPod, the first iPhone, to social media, to FitBits, you name it. Since we've had such close connections to technology, we pick up on it easily, we are comfortable with it, and we readily welcome new technological products. And since the digital world has become a massive part of the business world, it'd be good to have someone comfortable with technology to be a part of your company.
2. We're open-minded: Now, I'm not trying to say previous generations aren't open-minded. We, as a younger generation, have a whole different world experience than someone who was born even a decade earlier. We have access to other experiences around the world at the palm of our hands--in our phones, to be exact. We can access what anyone could be doing in another country in the matter of seconds, which offers up a more open-minded world view. Because of this access, we can offer fresh, new ideas, maybe some ideas that companies haven't tried before.
3. We adapt to change with ease: I feel this is a given with the Millennial Generation. With several changes happening in the world around us, we just ride the waves and figure out how to navigate with this new information and technology. We're practically a fresh slate when it comes to change. When some people might have trouble letting go of old procedures or managing a fast-paced work environment, we fly through it with passing colors because that's just what we're used to.
4. We work well under pressure: This one goes hand in hand with the previous statement. Growing up, we've been expected to reach perfection (e.g. standardized testing, AP classes, GPAs). We've grown up in a culture that emphasizes being quick and efficient. That's practically all we've ever known, so when it comes down to the wire, you can count on a recent college grad to keep their cool and handle stressful situations calmly.
5. Lastly, we're determined: Baby Boomers, and Generation Xs (Xers?), we hear you. You think we Millennials are dumb and lazy and self-centered and want everything handed to us. False. And we're ready to prove you wrong. Don't let one bad egg ruin a whole generation's reputation. We know this assumption about us and we're ready to show that we're not what you think. We're smart, resourceful, knowledgeable, and ready to change the world. So hire us, please.
